What brings you joy? Growing up, as I participated in Sunday school, vacation bible school, or went to church camp, one of the songs we sang had the lyrics:
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart,
Down in my heart, down in my heart
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart,
Down in my heart to stay!
What brought on this joy? Well, according to the song, it was “the love of Jesus down in my heart.” Jesus in our life brings joy. Mary, Jesus’ mother, experienced joy as she agreed to follow God’s call for her life. Joy is grounded in our relationship with God.
We sometimes use the words, “joy” and “happiness” interchangeably. Yet, our happy feeling is usually based on external conditions like the situation in which we find ourselves, the people around us, or events that occur. Experiencing joy goes deeper, “down in our hearts,” when we know we are loved unconditionally, and nothing can interfere with that; or we are fulfilling a call that is not easy, but we know that God is with us. What brings you joy?
I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday.
Yours in Christ,
